Article Overview
Overload relays protect electric motors by sensing excessive current and interrupting power to prevent overheating and winding damage.
Principle of Operation
An overload relay (OLR) is a protective device used in motor control circuits to prevent damage caused by prolonged overcurrent or overload conditions. It is typically connected in series with the motor and works in conjunction with a contactor. When the motor draws current above its rated value for an extended period, the relay detects this condition and trips, cutting off the power supply to the motor to prevent overheating and insulation damage .
Thermal Overload Relays
Most overload relays operate on the thermal principle, using a bimetallic strip that bends when heated by the motor current. The current flowing through the relay generates heat, which causes the bimetallic strip to deform. Once the strip bends beyond a set threshold, it activates a trip mechanism that de-energizes the contactor coil, interrupting the motor circuit . The tripping time is inversely proportional to the current: higher currents cause faster tripping, making thermal relays current-dependent and time-delayed .
Electronic Overload Relays
Electronic overload relays use sensors and electronic circuits to monitor motor current. They can provide adjustable tripping characteristics, phase failure detection, and automatic or manual reset options. These relays are more precise and can respond faster than thermal relays, offering protection against phase imbalance and overloads .
Key Components
- Input terminals (L1, L2, L3): Connect to the incoming power supply.
- Output terminals (T1, T2, T3): Supply power to the motor.
- Bimetallic strip or electronic sensor: Detects overcurrent conditions.
- Trip mechanism: Interrupts the motor circuit when overload is detected.
- Current setting dial (FLA adjustment): Allows setting the motor's rated current.
- Reset button: Resets the relay after tripping .
Working Summary
- Current Monitoring: The relay continuously monitors the motor current.
- Heat Generation: Excess current heats the bimetallic strip or triggers the electronic sensor.
- Trip Activation: When the current exceeds the set limit for a prolonged period, the relay trips.
- Power Interruption: The contactor is de-energized, cutting off power to the motor.
- Reset: After cooling or manual intervention, the relay can be reset to resume normal operation . By implementing this principle, overload relays ensure that motors are protected from overheating, winding damage, and phase failures, enhancing the reliability and lifespan of electrical motors in industrial and commercial applications .
