Multimode vs Single-Mode

- OM3 (Multimode): 50 µm core, multiple light paths, easier alignment, cost-effective for short distances, but suffers from modal dispersion over longer runs .
- Single-mode (OS1/OS2): 9 µm core, single light path, minimal dispersion, suitable for long-distance transmission (kilometers), but requires more precise and expensive transceivers . Because OM3 is multimode, it cannot function as single-mode fiber. Attempting to use single-mode transceivers on OM3 will result in significant signal loss and reduced performance.
Applications of OM3
OM3 fiber is ideal for:

- Short-range LAN connections within buildings or campuses
