What is OM3 Fiber?

OM3 stands for Optical Multimode 3, a type of multimode fiber with a 50-micron core designed to carry multiple light modes simultaneously. Multimode vs Single-Mode

The key difference between multimode (OM) and single-mode (OS) fibers lies in core size and light propagation:

  • OM3 (Multimode): 50 µm core, multiple light paths, easier alignment, cost-effective for short distances, but suffers from modal dispersion over longer runs .
  • Single-mode (OS1/OS2): 9 µm core, single light path, minimal dispersion, suitable for long-distance transmission (kilometers), but requires more precise and expensive transceivers . Because OM3 is multimode, it cannot function as single-mode fiber. Attempting to use single-mode transceivers on OM3 will result in significant signal loss and reduced performance.

Applications of OM3

OM3 fiber is ideal for:

  • Data center interconnects and equipment room links
  • Short-range LAN connections within buildings or campuses
  • High-speed Ethernet (10G, 40G, 100G) over distances up to 300 meters
