Article Overview

Intensity-based fiber optic sensors detect environmental changes by monitoring variations in the light intensity transmitted through an optical fiber.

Working Principle

Intensity-based fiber optic sensors operate on the modulation of light intensity as it propagates through an optical fiber. When the fiber is subjected to external physical changes such as pressure, displacement, strain, or bending, the amount of light reaching the detector changes. This change in intensity is directly related to the magnitude of the physical parameter being measured, allowing the sensor to convert optical signals into measurable electronic signals .

Types of Intensity Modulation

  1. Microbending Sensors: Small bends or deformations in the fiber cause light to scatter or leak out, reducing the transmitted intensity. The degree of microbending correlates with the applied force or pressure .
  2. Evanescent Wave Coupling: When two fibers are placed close together, the evanescent field of one fiber can couple into the other. Changes in the distance or surrounding medium alter the coupling efficiency, which is detected as a change in light intensity .
  3. Intrinsic vs Extrinsic Sensors: In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, and the environmental effect directly modulates the light intensity. In extrinsic sensors, the fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element, and the intensity change occurs outside the fiber .

Advantages

  • Simplicity: Only a light source and detector are required, making the system straightforward and cost-effective .
  • Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference: Since the signal is optical, it is unaffected by electromagnetic fields, ideal for high-voltage or sensitive environments .
  • Remote Sensing Capability: Light can travel long distances with minimal loss, allowing measurements in inaccessible or hazardous locations .

Applications

Intensity-based fiber optic sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring, industrial automation, robotics, and safety systems. For example, they can detect door positions in printers or copiers, monitor strain in bridges, or measure pressure in pipelines . In summary, the principle of intensity fiber optic sensors relies on detecting changes in light intensity caused by environmental effects on the fiber, providing a simple, sensitive, and versatile method for measuring various physical parameters.
